Garden Designer and advisor, Shenagh is passionate about planting the “right plant in the right place for the right person”. Educated in garden design at Capel Manor College Regents Park London her previous career includes specialising in asthma and allergy, working in London NHS chest and allergy clinics as a senior nurse for many years.

Treating people with severe asthma and allergies Shenagh has first hand knowledge of the effect susceptible individuals can suffer when exposed to outdoor allergens e.g. pollen. Working in the largest allergy clinic in the country with world-class specialists has provided a solid foundation for her new career.

The combination of expert knowledge in garden design and allergic conditions is unique and Shenagh aims to provide a specialist consultancy designing and planting healthier landscapes for all people, including those with allergies.

“I believe that being close to nature is beneficial to the health of all people however, we should also heed the needs of people with allergies.”

Identifying plants, shrubs and trees with the potential to induce allergic reactions in spaces frequented by people with allergies may help reduce symptoms. For many the higher the exposure the worse the symptoms, consequently it makes perfect sense to replace the high allergy plants with ones that are lower.

Garden Design Philosophy

Shenagh provides a full range of garden design services including consultation on low allergy/low pollen planting and garden design. Raising awareness of allergies is key to her practice particularly in areas that are educational and health care related environments. Shenagh has written articles due to be publishes by Allergy UK and the Society of Garden Designers explaining the scientific research, world evidence and rationale for reducing allergy triggers in the environment that are contributing to the increase in urban allergies.
